Darren Sylvester's multi disciplinary practice digs deep into using a wide range of pop culture elements and strong narrative tableaus. This current exhibition Out Of Life is of particular interest. He has sourced a 1970's unused Hollywood costume with the name tag 'Stacey' to base the main narrative around. Themes touching on Hollywood, mortality, consumerism are explored through romanic clichés like the Ikea Sunset or 1 1970's Sci-Fi movie. Taking inspiration from Darren's storytelling and ability to combine history with comments on contemporary capitalist culture to create an immersive exhibition experience is something I would like to explore in my practice.
A note on using Titles - Image 6 below - From a 2006 'I want to Carve A Future, Devour Everything And Become Something' the use of titles are used in an almost poetic way to suggest the narrative. Like a exert from a diary emotional states are condensed down into one single title from which the image is born.
