Read MoreJohn Stezaker's work, currently in view at the CCP. Similarly to Elad Lassry's work, interrupts the image to raise questions. Stezekar however uses the techniques of collaging or slicing to break the images association with language or identity. Often associated with surrealist painters and film makers; especially the image below to Salvidor Dali's 1929 film Un Chien Andalou.
Again, this work is of particular interest in relation to the appropriation of images to create a distant familiarity by using familiar images however then breaking the narrative to transforms the artwork into the surreal or uncanny. By doing this new meanings come forward. Similar to Stezaker, I am looking into an cultural generation just before I was born, by employing similar techniques, this could also pose questions around obsolete cultures. The current CCP Stezaker exhibition also includes 4 vintage dismembered mannequin hands on small plinths. The inclusion of found items that add to the narrative of the act of the artist hand in the collaging technique I found intriguing and something I would like to explore. The light pressure on the block that signifies actions and a soft and poetic gestures.
The titles bring the works to life and could act as metaphors as well as bodily touch - i.e Touch and Give..
I also found parallel associations with Man Ray's work with hands/gesture.
